Corey was warming up when I arrived. It was a chilly morning, despite the recent heat, and I could see my breath in the air as I jogged uphill from the street where Iâd parked my car. Even though it was early, the streets were full of commuters heading to work, and their cars zoomed past us in a steady stream.
He looked completely different in activewear. I stared at him, wondering if this was the same man whoâd sat in our living room the day before â without his suit, glasses and nerdy haircut, he looked almost hot. He was wearing a tight runnerâs t-shirt with shorts, and his hair was swept back under a camouflage print cap. His chest looked lean and strong. Without his glasses, his eyes seemed to fly around less and focus on me more.
âReady?â he asked, as he swung his arms and pulled them across his chest.
âAbsolutely,â I said, as I jogged on the spot to keep warm. Iâd missed running so much Iâd dreamed about it last night, and my legs felt restless, like theyâd absorbed my entire morning coffee.
Corey jogged toward the bridge and I followed him, keeping my pace steady, taking slow deep breaths. On the treadmill, I often pushed myself hard, increasing my speed, but if I was going to manage ten kilometres today, I needed to restrain myself. The sidewalk ran alongside the road and we jogged along in single file to avoid blocking the path of the runners moving in the opposite direction. The harbor glinted to our left, with the city sprawling out behind it. Despite the crisp weather, the sky was clear and I could already tell it would be a beautiful day.
I focused on my breathing, although it was becoming too ragged to talk.
Coreyâs legs were longer than mine, so his stride was too, and it meant he had a faster pace. The gap between us widened as we reached the end of the bridge, and soon I found myself pumping my legs harder just to keep up.
He veered left, down a flight of stairs that zig-zagged down to the street below, and we followed the path around the waterfront towards Circular Quay, where ferries bobbed in the water. I was used to this area being packed with tourists, but at this time of the morning, it was mostly full of tight-lipped commuters who streamed from the wharves to the city.
âLetâs walk for a minute,â I gasped, as I dodged a man in a suit who seemed to come out of nowhere.
Corey glanced back, and seeing my exhausted red face, slowed to a walk.
âI shouldnât leave it this long,â I panted. âI used to run five days a week.â
âItâs tough when youâve had a break,â Corey said. âBut your muscle memory will still be there; youâll get accustomed to it quickly.â
Even though I knew he was right, it was hard to believe when my legs felt like they were full of fire. But I kept moving,
